What Is Graphic Design?

Our Mission:

We want to bring together all parties and create a collective vision where everyone shines through design.

Graphic Design Is ...

One of the oldest visual arts disciplines, going back to the first caveman drawings in 31,000 B.C.

The merger of art and technology of the prevailing time period. Fields that evolved from graphic design include publishing, packaging design, advertising, digital media and digital art.

The use and creation of symbols, images and/or words to create a visual representation of ideas.

A number of artistic, professional disciplines which focus on visual communication and presentation.

However, Graphic Design Is NOT ...

A business or trades discipline. While there certainly are a number of careers that intersect with graphic design such as marketing, public relations and publishing, graphic design is a visual arts discipline that has commonalities with communications fields.

A field with low barriers of entry. More than 62 percent of graphic designers have at least a bachelor's degree, according to the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Information Network (O*NET).

Why Picaspeak?

The pica is a graphic design-specific typographic measurement that is 1/6th of an inch and commonly used in publication design. The purpose of this website and our program is to inform and educate NWSA students, parents and stakeholders to amplify the voice of visual arts through graphic design.

Our Vision

Our immediate goals are to develop relationships with colleges and universities and employers in the region to secure placement for our students. We also want to form one of the few high school chapters of the American Institute of Graphic Arts, the professional organization for graphic design.
